Early Learning Education Opportunities

Ortonville has many opportunities for your child to engage in learning at an early age.  This is a place to find out about these learning opportunities and to help build a positive educational experience.

Preschool Screening

Early Childhood screening helps identify strengths or problem areas that your child may be experiencing in his/her development.  It can provide helpful information about a child’s readiness for Kindergarten.  It is a help in preventing health and learning problems from becoming more serious.  It is not intended as a substitute for health care from your family physician, or other providers.  The state of Minnesota strongly encourages that all children beginning at age 3 be screened.  Early Childhood Screening is presently a requirement for kindergarten entrance.

For more information, call the Ortonville Public School at 320-839-6181.

Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE)

ECFE runs for ten weeks in the fall and ten weeks spring/winter 4:30-6:00 PM.  The classes are mixed ages-birth to 5 (but not yet in kindergarten).  We ask for $10 per child per 10 week session-this can be waived, if necessary.

Typical class schedule:  Class begins at 4:30 with parent-child interaction time.  We have a variety of activities available to do or the child can engage in free play. Parents are to let their child take the lead. At 5:15, we read a story and sing songs together as a large group.   At 5:30 children have a snack and continue playing and at this time parents go to parent session to talk over parenting topics.

Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE)

Early Childhood Special Education is for children birth through 6 years 11 months.   There is a home based program for children birth through 2 years 11 months and the center based program for children 3 years to 6 years 11 months.  Consultation and programming for the home based program is centered in the child’s home.  The center based program is located at the Ortonville Public School.  The program is set up to take referrals, do assessments, and provide the appropriate programming for the child and family any time during the year.  Referrals are made when there is a concern about a child’s cognitive, speech, gross or fine motor, social skills, or medical concerns that might affect how a child develops and learns.  These referrals are made from parents or family, doctors, Family Services, Countryside Public Health, or anyone who knows the family and child.  For more information call the Ortonville Public school at 320-839-6181.

  • Preschool through 2nd grade participate in our Lil' Cherub Choir.  The first 10 minutes of class is spent with music practice. The children's choir sings their practiced song right before Mass starts the last Sunday of the month. Sept-Apr.

  • Bell choir. Anyone who knows their colors can join; they can be visitors; they can be members who aren't a part of our religious education program or our registered students. Typically ages 3 years to  2nd grade. We have Bell Choir during Family Weekend/first Sunday of the month. Children go to the lobby right after communion to pick up their bells and then play in front of the congregation.
  • After Mass on Family Weekend (1st Sunday of month), we have coffee and rolls. During that time which is right before students have class, there is a craft/project that corresponds to a theme of the month. Any child is invited to do one and parents are heavily encouraged to help them.

  • Vacation Bible School. Typically Ages 3-4 and up.
Wednesdays in June at 5:30 PM. Parents are encouraged to come along and bring younger siblings join in. We will have it at 4 different locations this year (to go with our Nature/God theme). We start with Mass, dinner, then a viewing of a bible story put on by our high schoolers.  Afterwards, children are allowed to visit different stations for any length of time during a free rotation. Stations include music, crafts and games. If families are not able to make a Wednesday, they will not be "behind" for a later Wednesday.
